How We Built a Real-Time Virtual Queue Engine That Handles 10,000 Concurrent Check-Ins

The Problem: Growing Pains in the Queue
As more businesses joined WaitNook, we saw a spike in customers checking in – sometimes hitting 10,000 users at the same time across hundreds of shops. Slow queues or glitches weren’t an option.
How We Solved It — Step by Step
1. Switched to a Fast In-Memory Store
Traditional databases can slow down when tons of people check in at once. We switched our core queue logic to Redis—a super-fast, in-memory data store designed for this kind of bursty, high-traffic scenario. Redis lets us instantly add, update, or remove people from a queue in milliseconds, even under load.
2. Decoupled Check-Ins From Notifications
When someone checks in, you want all your staff’s devices updated—instantly. Instead of making check-in calls wait for notifications, we split it:
- One process records the check-in.
- Another (background) service sends real-time updates to staff and customers. This makes check-ins snappy and keeps notifications reliable, even when there’s a rush.
3. Load-Balanced Traffic Across Multiple Servers
We use several servers with load balancers in front. If one server is busy, others pick up the slack. This means we won’t get overwhelmed, even if a big chain or clinic has a sudden spike in walk-ins.
4. Smart Queue Cleanup
Some customers never show up. We built in automatic cleanup — if someone’s idle too long, the system gently bumps them out. This keeps queues consistent and avoids confusion for staff.
5. Real-Time Websockets
To show updates instantly on phones and tablets, we use Websockets. No more refreshing or reloading. You see every appointment update or walk-in in real time—in the shop or at home.
What This Means for Your Business
- No More Slowdowns: Even during Saturday rush, your queue stays fast.
- Instant Updates Everywhere: Front desk, staff, and customers are in sync.
- Future-Proof: As your business grows, WaitNook scales with you.
Takeaway: Reliable Tech for Real-World Shops
Most of these tools (like Redis or Websockets) are enterprise-grade, but we believe every small business deserves them. That’s why WaitNook runs smoothly, no matter how busy you get.
If you ever have a busy day and worry about digital check-ins failing, don’t—we’ve built the engine to handle your busiest mornings, hassle-free.
